Welcome to Kennebunkport, Maine.
Kennebunkport is a town located in York County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,720. It is perhaps best known as the location of the summer home of former president George H. W. Bush.
The town center located along the Kennebunk River, approximately one-half mile (1 km) from the mouth of the river on the ocean. Historically a fishing village, in recent decades the town has become a popular seaside tourist destination with a small district of souvenir shops, seafood restaurants, and bed and breakfasts. Its reputation as a upscale community comes from the numerous large seaside estates along Ocean Avenue and other coastal thoroughfares.
The famous "Bush Compound" is located on Walkers Point, a peninsula visible from Ocean Avenue. Just outside Kennebunkport is the Seashore Trolley Museum.

Kennebunkport is located in the southwestern part of the state near the New Hampshire state line. "The Kennebunks," is comprised of the picturesque seaside villages of Kennebunk, Kennebunkport, Cape Porpoise, Goose Rocks Beach and Arundel. Dock Square is the center of town in Kennebunkport, and if you love shopping, here is where you will want to spend the better part of a day exploring the boutiques and galleries that encircle the square and spill out into side streets and alleys. It has been described as "one of the liveliest spots on the New England coast!"
The Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport displays streetcars built from 1872 to 1972, and you can take a trolley ride through the Maine countryside aboard one of their restored open streetcars! Other activities include swimming and other beach activities at Kennebunk Beach, whale watching excursions, hiking and deep-sea fishing. Kennenbunkport has two waterfronts; downtown Kennebunkport and about three miles east is Cape Porpoise.
Still an active, working fishing village, Cape Porpoise was first discovered and named by Captain John Smith in the 1600s. Here, you will feel the real magic of the sea as you walk the pier and view the lighthouse on Goat Island, the fishing fleet and lobstermen unloading their catch for the day. Visitors enjoy "the Kennebunks" for its traditional flavor of "old Maine."
Kennebunkport is nestled between the Kennebunk River and the ocean--"the port" being on the east side of the river and Lower Village on the west. On both sides of the river, waterfront buildings steeped in history are the home of fine gift shops, clothing and jewelry boutiques, art galleries and some of the finest restaurants on the Maine Coast. Picturesque Dock Square, with its monument bursting with colorful flowers from spring through fall and its magnificent fir tree decorated with lobster buoys and thousands of lights for Christmas Prelude, has inspired local and national artist and photographers, as have the river, beaches, historical buildings and our rocky coast.
Over 100 years ago, this part of the Maine Coast first became a resort destination-- today it's "the place to be all year."

For 16 years, exactly a few more, I was gleeful when June came and I was no longer a student.
